With Optilight IPL, experience lasting relief from dry eyes

Quickly discover how this targeted IPL treatment can improve comfort and restore clarity to everyday life

Optilight IPL suitability criteria
Optilight IPL may be suitable if you suffer from dry eye due to meibomian gland dysfunction, blepharitis (including Demodex-related), or ocular rosacea. It can also help with chalazion and styes. It’s safe for different skin types using the Fitzpatrick scale, and the light’s intensity is carefully adjusted to suit your skin tone. Treatment suitability is assessed in person by Consultant Ophthalmologist Sharmina Khan, who will examine your eyes and skin to ensure it’s the right fit. It’s not suitable for everyone, such as those with certain skin conditions or recent procedures, but there are other options available too.
How Optilight IPL works
Optilight IPL is the only FDA-approved IPL device for dry eye treatment. It uses pulses of intense light to treat inflammation, unclog oil glands, and reduce abnormal blood vessels on the eyelids. Unlike older IPL machines that only treat the lower lid, the latest OptiLight system can treat both upper and lower eyelids. It also has a new handpiece designed to target chalazion and styes directly. The light is customised to your skin type using the Fitzpatrick scale, ensuring safe and effective treatment. Each session is led by Sharmina Khan, Consultant Ophthalmologist, in a medically supervised setting.
Advantages and disadvantages Optilight IPL
Optilight IPL offers many benefits.

It’s quick, non-invasive, and can reduce your dependence on eye drops. It treats the underlying cause of dry eye, not just the symptoms. Many patients notice improvements in comfort, tear quality, and vision.

However, it’s not a one-time fix. You may need several sessions and occasional top-ups. It’s also not suitable for all skin types.

Some people experience temporary redness or mild discomfort. And while OptiLight is safe for most, it’s important to have it done by someone trained and experienced.
Optilight IPL risks
Optilight IPL is generally very safe, especially when performed by a trained eye care professional. However, like all treatments, there are potential risks.

These may include temporary redness, swelling, or discomfort in the treated area. Rarely, people experience changes in skin pigmentation or blistering. There is a small risk of eye irritation if proper eye protection isn’t used. For this reason, it’s important to have the procedure done in a medical setting with the right safety protocols.

A detailed assessment will determine if you’re a good candidate and ensure any risks are minimised.
Optilight IPL Options and alternatives
If Optilight IPL isn’t suitable, there are other ways to treat dry eye. Options include prescription eye drops, warm compresses, eyelid hygiene routines, punctal plugs, and in-office treatments like LipiFlow or BlephEx.

Lifestyle changes, like increasing hydration or limiting screen time, can also help. Your eye care provider can guide you through the best options based on the cause of your symptoms, your eye health, and how you respond to previous treatments
Steps of Optilight IPL
Treatment begins with a consultation with Sharmina Khan, Consultant Ophthalmologist.

If Optilight IPL is right for you, protective shields are placed over your eyes.

A cooling gel is applied to the treatment area. Pulses of light are delivered around the eyelids and cheeks, targeting both upper and lower lids—something only this updated device can do.

The handpiece may also be used to treat any styes or chalazion.

The session takes 10–15 minutes and there’s no downtime.

Most patients need 4 sessions spaced 2–4 weeks apart.

Each one is done by Sharmina, ensuring consistency and specialist-led care throughout.
Results of Optilight IPL
Most patients start to notice an improvement in their dry eye symptoms after 2–3 sessions. Their eyes feel more comfortable, less irritated, and less reliant on artificial tears.

Vision often feels clearer too, especially in dry or windy environments. Optilight IPL helps the oil glands work better, improving tear stability over time.

Results tend to build with each session and can last several months.

Some people may need maintenance treatments a few times a year to keep symptoms under control.

The goal isn’t just symptom relief—it’s long-term control of the condition that causes dry eye.

Understanding dry eyes
What is dry eye? Dry eye is an eye condition caused by a problem with tears. Dry eye can make your eye feel uncomfortable, red, scratchy, and irritated. Despite the name, having dry eye can also make your eyes watery. Typically, dry eye doesn’t cause a permanent change in your vision. It can make your eyesight blurry for short periods of time, but the blurriness will go away on its own or improve when you blink.
